Steel, in nearly all of its forms, is subject to corrosion - the potential for a considerable annual loss of value (or cost of maintenance) to the owners of products or constructions in which steel is used. Corrosion can be mitigated by many means, but by far the most popular and long-term, cost-effective protective coating is zinc or one of the many zinc-containing alloys.
This brochure, in non-technical language, outlines zinc's current status as this predominant protective coating material. Various alloys are discussed along with coating methods, formability and adhesion. Particular attention is paid to the environmental performance of zinc coatings.

There have been instances where home owners and home builders have expressed concern about the effects of corrosion on galvanized, light-gauge, cold-formed steel framing. To resolve this issue, the International Lead Zinc Research Organization (USA) conducted an international research program to investigate the rates of corrosion in residential construction framing in five different countries.
The results showed that, in a wide variety of conditions and climates, "…steel will maintain its integrity for well over a hundred years - maybe even many hundreds of years." The brochure cites the reference research and how the documentation may be obtained.

Click here ! Zinc for Better Health
During the first half of the 20th century, researchers discovered that zinc is essential for the normal growth and survival of plants and animals. Despite these observations, many nutritionists doubted that zinc deficiency occurred in humans because zinc is naturally present throughout the environment and obvious clinical signs of deficiency were not apparent. Today, however, zinc deficiency is recognized as an important and widespread risk to human health. .......

Crop & Nutrition
Zinc in Fertilizers - Essential for Crops ... Essential for Life !
16-page brochure highlighting the importance of zinc fertilizers in correcting zinc deficiency in soils and crops with the objective of increasing crop quality and yield and getting more zinc into people’s diets. It is estimated that one third of the world’s population is zinc deficient, resulting in numerous health problems including poor immune response which may lead to high mortality rates especially among small children. For millions of people a few extra milligrams of zinc each day can make a difference between illness or death and a healthy, productive life.

Zinc in Fertilizers
An 8-page brochure highlighting the importance of zinc for crop production. Zinc is essential for soils and growth and good health of plants. In many agricultural areas of the world soils and plants are affected by zinc deficiency resulting in lower crop yields and poorer crop quality. Zinc in fertilizers can significantly enhance the quality and yield of crops.

Zinc in Soils and Crop Nutrition
by Brian Alloway, Emeritus Professor of Soil Science, University of Reading, U.K. 2nd edition 2008
Zinc is needed by plants in small but critical concentrations for a wide range of physiological processes. Zinc deficiency causes reduced yields, impaired quality and increased susceptibility to disease. Zinc deficiency is the most widespread of all micronutrient problems in crops. The current report puts the problem in a geographical and agronomic context and deals with the economic and humanitarian consequences of lost yields due to vast areas, amounting to millions of hectares of crops, being affected by zinc deficiency.

Zinc - The Vital Micronutrient for Healthy, High-Value Crops
by Brian Alloway, Emeritus Professor of Soil Science, University of Reading, U.K.
Zinc deficiency in crops of different types is a major problem in many parts of the world and leads to serious inefficiencies in crop production.Where zinc has been shown to be deficient by soil tests, plant analysis or diagnostic symptoms, the problem can easily be rectified. Relatively small amounts of zinc compounds such as zinc sulphate can cure the deficiency and last for several years before they need to be repeated. This treatment is highly cost effective when the costs of the zinc application and the value of the extra yield are considered.

Closing the Loop
The recycling of zinc-coated steel helps conserve natural resources because energy requirements for re-melting steel and recovering the zinc are less than those needed to produce the original metals. Steel and zinc both meet the objectives of an environmentally conscious society in search of sustainable materials.
